I have a chancre on my penis was it contracted from my partner through anal sex ?

I am in a monograms relationship with my partner. Recently I found a chancre sore on the end of my penis, and was diagnosed with syphilis. We are a gay couple and I am usually the “giver” in the relationship and he the “receiver”. Did I get this sore from his anus or it it possible I contracted it some other way ?
