eg. How do you approach an STD test with a new partner?

Is it against doctor patient confidentiality to tell someones partner they have an STD?

If a person were to be diagnosed with an STD but did not want to tell their partner, would it be against doctor patient confidentiality to tell them that their partner has an STD? Because if you did it would be breaking rules and if you didnt then it would be possible for the other person to get the STD.

If a person has an STD they are required by law to notify their partners.

This can be done confidentially and anonymously in many instances, but the partner may be able to figure it out.

STDs must be reported to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and/or a local authority such as a state health department. These are reported as statistics, NOT by individual's names.

No physician should tell another person someone else's diagnosis UNLESS the first person signed permission to allow this. For instance, a husband can sign that his medical information may be released to his wife.
