Mono is part of the herpes family, which includes a large range of diseases, including cold sores. Last time I checked cold sores aren't STDs.

Mono is not an STD. STD means Sexually Transmitted Disease. Mono is contracted from saliva.

Its not. STD means sexually transmitted, or happen through intimate contact. Furthermore, not all “STD’s” are transmitted solely through intimate contact, but most commonly are.

Last I heard you didn’t get Mono from having sex, Mono is contracted if someone else has/had mono.

Mono is called the “kissing disease” but you don’t need to kiss to get it. Its most commonly spread through saliva

You can get it from kissing, sharing drinks, school water-fountains, sharing food, pillows even.

I got it when I was in 7th grade – because a girl next to me in english had it, and before diagnosed I had shared a pencil, and she was coughing. My guess is she either coughed on the pencil or in my general direction. But it was not just through kissing.

Also, mono is under the herpes family – like cold sores. But I wouldn’t consider cold sores a STD either.

No its not. So you can’t win this one. People can get mono with out even knowing the person who gave it to them. This web site has a great deal of facts & info:
