eg. What are symptoms of chlamydia?

STD Test Results

Asked by on

Hello,
Recently me and my boyfriend were tested for everything and I got positive for syphilis but my boyfriend didn’t.
We have been having sex without a condom for a month (before the test results) is that possible he has the bacteria but because the bacteria is in the “sleeping” stage it didn’t show on the results?
And is that possible to get syphilis from oral sex and how?
Thank you!

There are a few possible scenarios that could be happening here. First, everyone’s immune system is different, so it’s possible you have not been infected. If that is the case, you should talk with your partner about safe sex practices moving forward and what methods you both are comfortable with.

However, syphilis can take time to manifest symptoms--anywhere from 21 to 90 days. Early symptoms of syphilis can range from sores and rashes to fever and swollen glands. Syphilis is known as the “great imitator” because of the ways its symptoms can mimic other conditions. Some people do not notice these symptoms because they can be mild.

Because of the delayed onset of symptoms, and the possibility of mistaking them for something else, you should probably be retested in a month to verify your status.

The good news is syphilis is easily treated with penicillin if caught early on. The bad news is you can be reinfected after your initial infection clears up. While it can be difficult to talk with a partner about STD status, it is important to do so, especially in this scenario, so that neither of you are reinfected.
